Topic 5 - System & Sustainability
The accelerated energy transition to an energy system based predominantly on renewable energies represents a huge technological and social challenge in many respects.
In a multi-component and highly decentralized energy system, the interplay of generation, storage, and provision of energy in the context of varying demand and volatile power feed-in by, for example, PV or wind power plants under different boundary conditions is very complex.
Therefore, a holistic view of energy system integration, the development of the necessary transport, distribution and information and communication infrastructure, must include systemic risks and uncertainties in addition to criteria of techno-economic feasibility and social acceptance.
The increased use of new energy-consuming technologies, the effects of climate change on energy supply and demand, possible impairments due to cyber attacks, and new raw material dependencies must therefore be factored into the identification of sustainable, resilient, or robust and future-proof energy systems.
Against this background, the topic "System and Sustainability" considers in an interdisciplinary environment of engineering, humanities and mathematicians, all energy system levels and evaluates, models and simulates individual technologies, including new smart control and management concepts, in the overall context of possible future energy systems and thus creates necessary conditions for the identification of sustainable and optimized energy systems.
